Sustainability Assessments
The Planning Act 2008 obliges all planning authorities in the planning process to take action on climate change. This statutory duty on local authorities builds on Planning Policy Statements which give guidance on sustainability, climate change and on renewable energy.
It is the Government’s intention for all homes to be built to a ‘zero carbon’ standard from 2016. In order to facilitate this the Government plans significant changes to Building Regulations commencing 2010 through which developers of new and converted homes and commercial property will have to substantially reduce the carbon emissions of the property they are building. Additionally it is the Government’s intention for all new commercial buildings to be constructed to zero carbon standards by 2019.
